Allen Tough was a pioneering scholar in self-directed learning, informal learning, and andragogy. His work in the Adult Learning world dates back to 1965 with his own studies and publishings.
Through his efforts, the term "self-directed learning" has become part of the adult education world. Tough's research into informal learning has been the basis for seven of his own books on adult learning theory, many articles and speaking engagements along with a lifetime of research on the adult learner.
Allen Tough is also known for his work with the scientific search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI) program. He founded the Invitation to Extraterrestrial Intelligence (ETI) in 1996 which is a world network for scientists, astronauts, futurists, artists and educators.
